What is Amethyst? Amethyst is a form of quartz and is the most highly prized variety. The top grade is a deep purple in color and is
free from flaws or inclusions. The ancient Greeks believed that the stone would protect them from the effects of drinking
wine when held under the tongue while drinking. The ancient cultures believed that by wearing amethyst jewelry it would insure
pleasant dreams, improve memory, and provide protection from poisoning. The gem was held in high esteem and it was even used
in the foundation walls of New Jerusalem and in the breastplate of the High Priest of Israel. Catherine the Great had a true
fondness for amethyst jewelry and her love for the gem helped in developing sources in Russia and contributed to the enrichment
of the Russian Treasury. The British Crown Jewels are still adorned by some of these fine gems. Very large pieces were carved into decorative objects and used to make drinking goblets. This Russian variety was
most often banded with white quartz giving it a very unique appearance. |
